A Roman subarmalis is a padded, sleeveless undergarment worn by legionaries beneath metal armor like chainmail or segmentata. Crafted from sturdy cotton, it absorbs impact, prevents chafing, and evenly distributes the weight of the armor. Many designs feature comfortable quilted padding and fabric pteruges (lappets) for extra mobility and protection.
