Description
Replica of a ridge helmet type Intercisa depicted on a famous fresco in the San Giovanni catacombs in Syracuse, dated ca. 315-360 CE.
The colours of the helmet in the fresco led us to suppose that the skull, the crest and the mobile pieces of the helmet may have been gilded. In the fresco, the decorative eyes seem to be blue: we conjectured that it may have represented tinning or silvering, and we chose the second for the replica.
In fact, many helmets from the Late Antiquity were often covered with silver or gold foil.
Even if a front plaque with the Chrismon, fixed to the front part of the crest, was very widespread during the 4th century, this one doesn’t have it – since also in the original fresco is completely absent.
4th century CE.
Mild steel, leather, 4/10 thick silver foil, galvanic gilding 24 K.
Inner measurements: 19 x 21 cm
