Helmet type Witcham Gravel

Description

Replica of a specimen now in the British Museum, dated ca. 50-75 CE.
It has been classified as auxiliary cavalry helmet type B. The original had an iron core (now almost completely corroded) and tinned bronze decorations.
The Witcham-Gravel helmet is the only specimen of its typology, and presents unique features such as the decorative bosses.
Marks on the bowl of the helmet indicate that a crest was present. As told by Arrian in his Ars Tactica (2nd century CE), yellow was a colour associated with cavalry, and it’s plausible that it was so already in the 1st century CE.
