Description
The Boeotian helmet imitates the felt hat of travelers and horsemen. It became the “national” helmet of Alexander the Great’s cavalry, and then of the Hellenistic cavalries.
As a helmet linked with a prestigious rank (associated with the status of horseman), it became a sign of rank, so it can be often found represented worn by officers and kings – for instance, by Eucratides, a king of the graeco-bactrian kingdom – .
Even if associated mainly with horsemen, the Boeotian helmet is also sometimes depicted worn by infantrymen.
This kind of helmet was used until the 1st century BCE, also by the Romans: a famous example is the horsemen on the Altar of Domitius Enobarbus.
